Howse Peak during a clearing storm
My painting of Howse Peak in the Canadian Rockies shows the mountain from the East when viewed from Chephren Lake. Howse Peak is located North of Lake Louise along the Banff Jasper Highway in Banff National Park, Alberta. This is one of my favourite mountains to paint or photograph. Howse is a really dramatic peak and has this unique symmetrical balance from one side the other. One of the few mountains in the Rockies that is close to the highway and shows that much visible relief, rising abruptly behind Waterfowl Lakes when viewed from the road. It also faces East so it catches some great lighting in the morning, as shown in the two photographs in the slides below. I loosely based the painting above on the Howse Peak in the Mist photograph. Showing the mountain with a dark black hue due to the water covering the face from the passing storm and the stunning contrast of the blue sky as the sky cleared.
