Mount Louis in the Canadian Rockies
My Painting of Mount Louis at Sunset shows the mountain from the Southeast. Mount Louis is located near the Banff townsite in Banff National Park. It is a perfect subject for my style of painting, which utilizes straight lines. Its steep bedding planes projecting skyward remind me of a cathedral. Although it is not as abstract as some of my later work, it is moving in that direction. The image below was my model for this painting,
I once climbed this mountain via the Gmoser route and had the privilege to spend the night out on it .Although climbers seek to avoid having to bivouac on climbs, I messed up on the decent and my partner and I were overtaken by the night. So we sat on a ledge listening to the sounds of the mountain, watching the stars drift across the sky until we could finish our decent in the morning. The funny thing is that having to do that makes the experience that much richer in my memory. It’s like I feel closer to the mountain having spent the night up there.
