This is my painting of Snowpatch Spire in the Bugaboos , which is a group of mountains located southwest of Golden BC in the Purcell range. The reference image below and in the video are from around the summit of Bugaboo Spire after climbing the Northeast ridge of that mountain with my wife.
I had climbed Snowpatch Spire via the snow patch route some years earlier. I can remember just cresting the summit ridge and suddenly seeing dark ominous clouds moving quickly towards me and my partner. No summit photos or snacks .We scrambled to begin our descent Just as we were starting to rappel off the top, the lightning and rain and hail started, making for a very exciting descent from the top. Including having to free one of our jammed rappel ropes as we were trying to descend. Great memories!
The second image below shows the two mountains, with Bugaboo Spire on the right. The Northeast ridge being the right skyline. Snowpatch Spire is on the left with the snow patch clearly visible. The route I climbed just goes up along the left hand edge of the snowpatch and then up the face above. The Howser Towers are in the middle background.
One of my first paintings to explore the use of intersecting planes of light. I was trying to describe movement of light and the interaction of the mountain with the sky.
